10kV XLPE Insulation Power Cable Selection and Laying Precise Checklist

2026/07/17
一、10kV XLPE Cable Selection Checklist
1. Voltage Grade Confirmation (Mandatory)
Must select 8.7/10kV XLPE cable for 10kV power distribution systems. Ordinary 6kV grade cables are prohibited to avoid insulation breakdown and partial discharge failure under system overvoltage.
2. Core & Material Selection
– Copper core (YJV series): Standard choice for urban grid, industrial plants, key public projects; stable conductivity, strong overload resistance, high safety.
– Aluminum core (YJLV series): Suitable for long-distance overhead, suburban trunk lines, cost-sensitive conventional projects; not recommended for heavy-load and continuous full-load scenarios.
– Insulation priority: Choose water-tree resistant XLPE material for underground long-term laying to delay insulation aging and extend service life.
3. Armoring & Sheath Selection by Scenario
– YJV / YJLV: Non-armored; for cable tunnel, bridge, indoor pipe laying, no external mechanical damage risk.
– YJV22 / YJLV22 (steel tape armored): Most widely used; for direct burial, roadside green belt, outdoor pipe trench, anti-compression and anti-stone impact.
– YJV32 / YJLV32 (steel wire armored): For shaft vertical laying, river crossing, mountain slope laying; bear cable self-weight tension.
– WDZ-YJY23: Low-smoke zero-halogen flame retardant type; mandatory for pipe gallery, subway, hospital, data center and dense building areas, fire-safe and non-toxic.
4. Cross-Section Selection Principle
– Match cross-section according to continuous load current + short-circuit current, not only based on conventional power.
– Reserve 20%–30% margin for industrial heavy-load, seasonal peak load and future capacity expansion.
– Long-distance transmission needs to verify voltage drop to avoid insufficient terminal voltage.
5. Strictly Forbidden Selection
– No mixed use of old and new cables in the same loop.
– No low-grade PVC insulated cables replacing XLPE cables for 10kV medium-voltage lines.
– Ordinary non-armored cables are forbidden for direct burial without protective measures.
二、10kV XLPE Cable Laying & Construction Precautions
1. Environmental & Temperature Requirements
– Long-term operating temperature: ≤90℃; short-circuit allowable temperature: ≤250℃ (within 5s).
– Construction ambient temperature: ≥0℃; avoid construction in severe low temperature to prevent XLPE insulation cracking.
– Avoid long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays; outdoor laying must use UV-resistant outer sheath or add shielding protection.
2. Laying Standard Requirements
– Bending radius: Non-armored ≥15D; armored ≥20D (D = cable outer diameter), prohibit sharp bending to prevent insulation damage.
– Tensile control: Direct burial & bridge laying control small tension; vertical shaft laying must use steel wire armored cable, prohibit excessive stretching.
– Spacing standard: Keep safe distance from heat sources, gas pipelines and corrosive pipelines; layered laying of high and low voltage cables, no mixed stacking.
3. Direct Burial Construction Key Points
– Lay sand cushion at the bottom and cover fine sand after cable placement, then lay protective cement board.
– Avoid laying in swamp, severe water accumulation and corrosive soil; use anti-corrosion sheath or outer protection if unavoidable.
– Set obvious cable marker piles at turning points, joints and both ends of the line.
4. Cable Joint & Termination Control
– 10kV XLPE cables must use matched professional intermediate joints and terminal heads, prohibit makeshift accessories.
– Construction must be dust-free and dry; strictly control semi-conductive layer cutting and insulation polishing to avoid burrs and gaps (main cause of partial discharge).
– Complete waterproof sealing for joints; underground humid environment needs enhanced waterproof treatment.
5. Acceptance & Operation Pre-Test
– After construction, conduct insulation resistance test, DC withstand voltage test and partial discharge detection.
– Ensure no damage to insulation and outer sheath; eliminate hidden dangers of water ingress and mechanical injury.
三、Core Summary
10kV XLPE medium-voltage cable project quality depends on correct model selection + standardized laying + standardized joint production. Adhering to the above checklist can effectively avoid common faults such as insulation aging, partial discharge, water tree breakdown and line tripping, and ensure the 25–30 year stable service life of the power distribution line.
